Château de Chambrun

The wines of this vintage are characterized by exceptional concentration that has rarely been equalled. The fruit is excellent, the mid-palate is rich and dense, and the tannins are velvety. The finish is tremendous and very long on the fruit. The sunny conditions and low rainfall produced higher alcohol levels. However, the good acidity levels ensure balance on the palate, despite the low malic acid content.

Wine Advocate

The 2009 Chambrun, cropped at 20 hectoliters per hectare, is a final blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc that hit just over 14% natural alcohol. Bottled unfined and unfiltered by oenologist Michel Rolland, the wine possesses notes of chocolate fudge, blackberry jam, toasty oak, charcoal and graphite. A superb texture, a full-bodied mouthfeel and a terrific finish all make for a wine that should cost two or three times what this will fetch. Drink it over the next decade.

Score: 92. —Robert Parker, February 2012.

Wine Spectator

Toast and cola notes frame black cherry and plum in this spicy red, which is a bit angular, with a thick texture, muscular tannins and a hint of balsamic acidity that provides sweetness. Good concentration. Best from 2014 through 2020. 1,080 cases made.

Score: 89. —Thomas Matthews, 2012.
