Barrua is deep crimson red in color with violet highlights and aromas of crushed fresh blackberries and a suave, silky palate supported by sweet, refined tannins and a fine note of acidity. Together, the color, fragrance, extract and alcohol achieve a degree of richness which yields wine of opulent suppleness, elegant tannins and finely tuned acidity: a textbook expression of the Carignano grape.

Wine Enthusiast

A blend of Carignano (85%), Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, Barrua is the so-called Sassicaia of Sardinia. (In fact, it represents a partnership between the island's most prestigious co-op, Cantina di Santadi and the makers of Tuscany's Sassicaia.) This beautiful vintage shows wild sage, black currant and loads of soft spice.

Score: 92. —Monica Larner, December 15, 2011.

Wine Spectator

Compact yet elegant, delivering supple layers of raspberry, kirsch and blackberry. Fine tannins add support, with layers of sweet fruit, spice and light oak notes filling in the long, savory finish. Drink now through 2016.

Score: 91. —Nathan Wesley, 2012.
