Haut Medoc is located south of the Medoc region, and northwest of the city of Bordeaux. (Medoc is actually divided in two sections - the Haut Medoc in the south, and the north traditionally called Medoc.) The region of Haut Medoc was a marshy area until drained in the 17th century. Now, it is one of the most valued regions of Bordeaux, producing a variety of well known appellations such as Margaux, Pauillac and Saint Julien. Haut Medoc is predominately a red wine producing area. Most are made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, and are often blended with Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The resulting wines are light in flavor with notes of blackberry, black fruits, wood and vanilla.
