The Santa Lucia Highlands appellation is a north-south running AVA with elevations that span from 40 to 1,200 feet. There are only about 2,300 acres planted to grapes in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Blocked from the Pacific Ocean by the Santa Lucia Mountains, the region experiences cool morning fog and afternoon breezes from Monterey Bay resulting in one of California’s longest growing seasons. At its higher elevations, the fog burns off much earlier. The vines on the AVA’s southeastern-facing slopes receive direct sunlight, particularly at the higher elevations. The wines produced in the Highlands are widely recognized with Chardonnay (making up over half of the wines produced in this AVA) and Pinot Noir as the stars of this growing region.
