Monte Antico Rosso 2004
A Pocket-Friendly Super-Tuscan!
"...An Outstanding Value".
Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 88 Pts.
Monte Antico is a propietary label of Neil and Maria Empson. One of Italy's most prestigious winemakers, Franco Bernabei, has led them in making their own mark on Tuscan soil. Bernabei's oenological skills are revered and relied upon throughout Italy. (He is the consulting oenologist to Selvapiano, Fontodi, and Felsina, among others). His incredible winemaking talent allows the Sangiovese in the wine to realize its ultimate potential, complementing it with Merlot and Cabernet. The wine is consistently excellent - a reward which comes from the finest selections of grapes being cherry-picked according to the harvest conditions in the individual terroirs and microclimates.
The blend, which varies with vintage, is generally 85% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvigon. The Empson's price the wine judiciously, which makes it consistently one of Italy's best values. It is an extremely versatile, food-friendly which pairs particularly well with pasta, risotto, fowl, meat and cheese.
