At Bacalhoa Vinhos de Portugal

Of course, when one thinks of Portugese wine, Porto naturally comes to mind. Even collectors of fine Port rarely think of Portugal as producing anything else worthy of attention. But this couldn't be further from the truth. The wines of Portugal are great - and their prices are equally great!

Portugal has the oldest appellation - the Douro Valley is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. Grape growing in this region dates back to prehistoric times. Portugal has come a long way since then! The finest, and highest-value wines of Portugal are produced in the region of Douro. The quality and uniqueness of the wines have made the country a major player in the world market.

Recently, we've been tasting many still wines from Portugal, and have been quite impressed. We've added several to our selection of "great value" wines.The Serras de Azeitao Red, So Touriga Nacional, and Tinto da Anfora are all made by Filipa Tomas da Costa. She is the winemaker and technical director for Bacalhoa Vinhos de Portugal, and is one of the most prominent winemakers in the country.  She is also a graduate of the University of Bordeaux.

The Evel Douro Branco, Quinta dos Aciprestes, and Porca de Murca are made by Real Companhia Velha, a company representing the Fine Wines of the Douro. With their selection of wines, they conquered the critical standards of the most demanding critics in the space of three years, and have captured the attention of the Portugese consumer.
