As of 2006, the vineyards at Grgich Hills are certified organic. As of 2007, they are certified Biodynamic.

Mike Grgich, now 85, still oversees daily operations at the Grgich Hills Winery. He first gained international recognition at the now famous "Paris Tasting" of 1976. In an historic blind tasting, a panel of France's most well-known wine judges tasted an array of France's fabled Burgundies, under intense scrutinization. Included in this bunch were a small sample of some of California's newly created Chardonnays. When the results came in, the French judges were shocked: Mike Grgich's 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay had been deemed the finest white in the world. The international wine community was of course shocked, to say the least, as California had not yet made it's mark in the world of wine. From that point on, Mike was known as one of the finest winemakers in the world.

In 1977, Grgich Hills was born. The exquisite, richly complex Chardonnays of Mike Grgich soon became their signature wines, and continue to delight wine lovers all over the world. The winery continues to be committed to making distinctive wines of quality, consistency and longevity. Presidents Reagan and Clinton, Queen Elizabeth II, and France's President Mitterand have all been known to serve the wines at state dinners.

Over the past 50 years, Mike Grgich has won a stream of California and international prizes, establishing the winery as one of the premier wineries in the U.S. and the world. In 2008, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the California State Fair, for his contributions to the wine industry.

Today, Grgich owns all of its vineyards, all of which are grown organically. Since 2003, all of the wines are labeled "Estate Grown". This addition was made to insure the continuation of the production of superior wines, and that the winery would remain a symbol of prestige. In 2007, the winery changed its name to Grgich Hills Estate.

We tasted these wines several weeks ago, and each stood out as a terrific representation of what California wines should be.  The 2004 Napa Cabernet won Two Double Golds in the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. The Chardonnay and Fume Blanc have also received high praise. We tasted the wines, and we know what all the "hype" is about. If you've tasted them, you know too. If not, now is the perfect time to find out!
