Nicolas and Laura Catena

Over the past 20 years, Nicolas Catena and daughter Laura, together with their vineyard management team, have worked tirelessly in the discovery, identification, and development of key microclimates in the high altitude wine country of Mendoza, Argentina. The in depth study of the different microclimates led Nicolas to determine that the same varietal, and even the same clone, present distinct aromatic and flavor profiles when cultivated in these distinct microclimates, even when just a few kilometers apart.  Furthermore, he discovered that blending wines from the different lots would create wines of greater complexity.

The Catena wines are a blend of single varietal lots from the family's vineyards. Each vineyard is divided into lots that are harvested separately, and specially prepared to be an integral part of each Catena wine. The Catena Malbec has always been one of my favorite wines. The family's Malbec vineyards exist at different altitudes with each vineyard contributing specific characteristics to the wine. Ripe plum fruit flavors come from the Angelica Vineyard (2,850' elevation); a dark fruit character and pepper notes come from La Piramide vineyard (3,100' elevation); the Altamira vineyard (3,870') contributes the black cherry aromas and excellent structure; and the explosive floral aromatics and concentrated mouthfeel come from the Adrianna vineyard (5,000').  The individual components assist in creating a wine of wonderful balance, complexity and a strong varietal identity. The $16.99 price tag for this exceptional wine identifies it as an incredible bargain.

The 2005 Nicolas Catena Zapata is an extremely limited, special wine.  It is made from a selection of the best lots of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec in the Catena Zapata vineyards. This wine is only produced in outstanding vintage years. It is a true collector's wine.  The first vintage produced was 1997. It was released in 2000, and in a series of blind tastings throughout the USA and Europe, it was compared blind to Chateau Latour, Haut Brion, Solaia, Caymus and Opus One.

The 2005 vintage is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 22% Malbec, and earned a 98 point rating from Jay Miller in The Wine Advocate.  If you are interested in this wine, please place your order early as we have a very limited quantity.
