If you are tired of the usual Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs, why not try something new this summer? The perfect place to turn for affordable, outstanding whites is Spain. For example, have you tried Godello? The staff tried one yesterday, and the response was unanimous - we loved it! Godellos from Valdeorras are becomming the new, rising star in Galician premium whites. This native grape variety is found in the small appellation of inland Galicia, in the province of Ourense. The Godello grape is one of the oldest in the Iberian Peninsula - it was described by travellers in the times of the Roman Empire. It grows characteristically in tightly clustered, small bunches. As a result, the yields are extremely low, and requires a great deal of care in the field as it offers little resistance to disease. The Montenovo is 100% Godello. The wine offers floral and grassy aromas with hints of ripe pear and pineapple. It is delicious, full-bodied and unctuous with a well-balanced acidity. We urge you to try this perfect summer sipper - you will not be disappointed! Another varietal you may be more familiar with is Albarino, also from Galicia in the region of Rias Baixas. The wine is noted for its distinctive aroma, similar to Viognier. Albarino typically produces medium-bodied wines which are crisp, vibrant and offer flavors of peach and apricot. The wine has recently caught the attention of knowledgeable wine consumers throughout the world. One of the best-known producers in Rias Baixas is Martin Codax. The Burgans 2007 Albarino has a fruity, highly complex aroma where the variety is clearly appreciated. It is extremely enjoyable with or without food. We are excited to promote these two alternatives to the regular, "run-of-the-mill" white varietals.
