James Suckling's comments after tasting 160 Brunello's from the 2007 vintage:
“I was incredibly impressed with the richness of the wines. They are wonderfully fruity with a purity of ripe Sangiovese that is seldom seen from the vineyards surrounding the hilltop town of Montalcino. The bright fruit in the wines overshadowed their firm tannins and fresh acidities, yet they remain agile with tension.”
For those of you unfamiliar with the region, Montalcino is a hilltop town in Tuscany's Brunello district. There are not too many true, Montalcino-born, family run estates anymore...but La Rasina is one of them. It was founded in the early 1970's by Santi Mantengoli. His son Vasco later managed the estate, and today it is his grandson Marco who holds down the fort.
Brunello is made from Sangiovese - Tuscany's claim to fame. The wines are full of cedar, cherries and earthy notes. Sangiovese also produces Chianti, Rosso di Montalcino, Montefalco, and others. It is also known as the backbone of many of the modern-style "super-Tuscans".
Sangiovese's acidity makes it a great wine to pair with food. It truly shines with grilled meats like steak, pork or lamb, especially when seasoned simply with olive oil, dried herbs and sea salt. It also works very well with salty, dry cheeses and because of it's acidity, can hold its own with tomatoes.
