The wine-producing regions of France span over 2 million acres of vineyards, and produce over 9 billion wine bottles every year. With the world’s second-largest vineyard surface (behind Spain), there is no large area of France in which grapevines are not cultivated. Because of this, French wine is second only to Italian wine in total production.
The primary wine regions of France include Alsace, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Loire, Provence and the Rhone Valley. Although the country is no bigger than the state of Texas, French wines differ dramatically depending on the area in which they are produced. The warm weather south tends to produce darker, richer blends of different grape varieties, while the wines from the north usually contain just one type of grape.
The diversity of French wines from one region to another lends itself well to an ample selection of gifts for wine lovers. All of the common wine types are produced in France - red, white, blush, and sparkling. The type of wine that is produced in any particular region is determined by that region’s terroir - the combination of its soil, location, and climate. French wine is almost always named for its appellation, or the region in which the grapes where grown, instead of the type of grape varietal used.
