Portugal has justifiably earned a superb reputation for producing outstanding Ports. Until recently, Port was the country’s “claim to fame.” It comes as no surprise that the leader of the Portuguese grape varietals is Touriga Nacional, the principal component of Port. This varietal is gaining increasing presence throughout the country. As a result of modernizing vineyards and updating winemaking practices, Portugal is quickly climbing the industry’s popularity ladder. Although the country is small, it comprises a variety of soils, climates and varietals, allowing for a great diversity of types of wine; adding to the overall appeal of Portuguese wines is their attractive pricing.
