The Haag family estate in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer has been in the same family for over 400 years. The original winery, a timber framed house built in the 15th century, still stands on the estate property near the modern winery and is a symbol of the tradition established by the first Haag winemakers - a tradition of steadfastness and a commitment to quality. It is not known how large the Haag estate was 400 years ago; however the size of the estate changed frequently due to the "Code Napoleon" which required that property must be split evenly among the heirs of the deceased. Currently, the estate is approximately 3.5 hectares. Marcus and is mother, Inge currently manage the winery. Marcus is the winemaker, and Inge takes care of the office and marketing responsibilities. For Marcus, there was never a question about his role in the winery because the tradition in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer has always focused on the passing down of property and knowledge from father to son. In addition to what he learned from his father, Marcus also attended the Wine School in Geisenheim where he finished with a degree in winemaking and viticulture. After finishing school, Marcus worked for other wineries for three years before returning to his family's estate. The primary vineyard sites are located in Brauneberger, Juffer-Sonnenuhr, and Juffer with most of these vineyards being gray Devon slate. The soil conditions and the microclimate provide an excellent growing environment for Riesling due to the cool nights and warm days.
