In the Oc language, "Fougas" is the name of a bird capable of soaring to great heights. "Maldoror" is a tribute to the "Chants de Maldoror" (songs of Maldoror) by the writer, Lautréamont, acclaimed as a forerunner of 20th century French literature. Maldoror ‘blossoms' in the cellars, where painstaking care is taken during its 16 to 18-month maturation in new barrels and in obtaining an elegant blend between the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Quickly becoming my favorite Cotes de Bourg estate, Fougas-Maldoror’s gorgeous 2005 reveals notes of chocolate, sweet cherry jam, smoke, and barbecue spice. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, and fleshy, it will offer beautiful drinking over the next decade.(89-91)

An interesting coffee and cigar note coats the black cherry and berry. Medium- to full-bodied, turning a bit chewy on the finish, but there?s a good concentration of fruit and mineral. Needs time. Best after 2011.
