The complete climate of Corton-Charlemage is situated north of the town of Beaune and has a complete different geologie in comparison to the Grand Crus of the Montrachet. The Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne is produced within the villages of Aloxe Corton, Pernand Vergelesses and Ladoix Serrigny. This great terroir got its name from the famous emperror Charlemagne who ordered the plantation of vines in a big part of his domaine which was offered in 775 to the Abby of Saulieu. The wine from this terroir has an impressive complexity, exclusively due to different soils within the three villages. The wines devellop mineral and homney tones and need at least 5 years in bottle before they express their fully potential. The 2009 Corton Charlemagne packs a powerful, youthful punch right out of the gate. Layers of incredibly complex fruit (apple, pear, peach) merge with mineral, vibrant acidity, earth and oak.

Wine Enthusiast

As always, Corton-Charlemagne offers an opulent Chardonnay. In this vintage, the wine has intense tropical fruits, very ripe although never losing sight of its acidity. There is terrific concentration here, giving a wine that is very rich.

Score: 95. —Roger Voss, December 31, 2011.

A fresh and elegant if mildly reticent nose of lemon/lime, wet stone and green apple trimmed in a subtle application of warm oak and discreet sulfur hints gives way to big, taut and well-muscled broad-shouldered flavors that possess excellent dry extract and ample finishing intensity on the explosive finish that also exhibits a faint saline character. I very much like the intensity here as well as the very dry backend. This should be most impressive in time.
