This is a new wine made by Mariano Garcia, owner of Bodegas Maurodos, from vineyards planted in sandy clay soils in three different areas in Toro. The average age of the vines are 20 years old. Harvested by hand and selection of grapes in the vineyard. Aged for 11 months in oak barrels. Unfiltered. This wine shows the unmistakable touch of Mariano’s masterful use of oak whereby concentrated dark fruit aromas and toasted, spicy aromas from oak coexist and it is nearly impossible to tell one from the other.

Wine Advocate The 2004 Prima is 100% Tinto Fino aged for 11 months in French and American oak and bottled unfiltered. Purple-colored, it reveals notes of cedar, pencil lead, black currant, and blackberry liqueur. Medium to full-bodied, the wine’s personality is fruit-filled and flavorful. It has fine depth and concentration and the tannin is ripe. This strong effort will evolve for 2-4 years and drink well through 2017. It is an outstanding value. Score: 90. —Jay Miller, February 2007.
