This wine takes its name from the cork trees (“sughero” in Italian) that surround the vineyard. A wine of great character, the native Sangioveto and the international varietals Cabernet and Merlot are blended together to realize an ideal Italian-French wine.

Wine AdvocateThis is a delicious value wine that has shown great strides forward in quality over the past two vintages. The 2013 Maremma Toscana Le Sughere di Frassinello is a hot seller and with 95,000 bottles produced, it should not be difficult to locate. The blend consists of Sangioveto, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The oak is evident but it is also folded nicely within the thickness of the wine. Rich flavors of dark fruit, spice, licorice and grilled herb peel off in thick layers. This wine is really beginning to shine.

VinousSweet red cherry, plum, mocha, licorice, lavender and dark spices meld together in the 2013 Le Sughere di Frassinello. Pliant, silky and expressive, the 2013 will drink well for at least a handful of years. The French oak is a bit noticeable at this point, but that is a pretty small critique at this level. - Antonio Galloni

Wine EnthusiastViolet, dark berry and a whiff of spice lead the nose on this blend of 50% Sangiovese, 25% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. The sleek, straightforward palate doles out black cherry, raw raspberry and aniseeed accompanied by fine-grained tannins. Drink 2016-2020.

Wine SpectatorThis red offers a hearty mix of black cherry, plum and pomegranate flavors, with earth and underbrush elements. On the brawny side, revealing dusty tannins on the finish. Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2017 through 2023. 6,667 cases made.
