Wine AdvocateShowing a bold garnet color, the 2011 Aglianico del Vulture Teodosio is extra soft and layered. This is a more immediate expression of one of the Italian wines best known for its long aging capacity. Sweet tannins are followed by sweet tobacco, new leather, ripe fruit, blackberry preserves, cola and licorice. This is a lovely expression that will show its best side within the next five years or so. Because of the heat of the vintage, I would expect a shorter drinking window compared to wines made in cooler years. Basilisco is now managed by Campania's Feudi di San Gregorio who is doing much to invest new ideas and marketing power for the promotion of the greater Vulture-Basilicata wine region. One of the most fascinating aspects of this tasting is putting Aglianico del Vulture next to Aglianico from Taurusi made by the same team of winemakers in a comparative tasting. The Vulture expressions are extremely compelling and persuasive. To my palate they offer a degree of fullness and richness found only in Basilicata. My feeling is that there is enormous untapped potential here that has not been fully explored.

Wine EnthusiastThis fragrant red opens with lovely scents of perfumed berry, blue flower and Oriental spice while the polished palate offers dried black cherry, blackberry, anise and clove. Fine-grained tannins give the finish grip.

Wine SpectatorTar and dried herb notes on the nose underscore creamed cherry, fig cake, star anise and candied orange zest in this medium-bodied red, with plush tannins. Firms up a bit on the fresh finish. Drink now through 2021. 2,500 cases made.
