Quinta do Vallado Touriga Nacional 2014
|Brand||Quinta do Vallado|
Wine SpectatorThis lithe red is generous, with boysenberry, Asian spice and ripe blackberry flavors highlighted by creamy dark chocolate and slate accents. Violet and grilled herb details show on the long finish. Drink now through 2022. 6,166 cases made.
Wine EnthusiastAt the western edge of the main Port vineyards, this estate is as well placed for fine wine as for Port. This richly structured Touriga Nacional has attractive acidity, perfumed black fruit and robust, tight tannins. With its wood aging, it's made to age. Drink from 2021.
Wine AdvocateThe 2014 Touriga Nacional was aged for 16 months in French barriques (30% new). It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Soft and caressing, this has some grip on the finish, but not a lot of lift or precision--credit the difficult vintage for that, I presume. It is just a touch hollow in the mid-palate. That said, I loved the sexy texture here and it has a classy feel to it. In a tough year, this may not be Vallado's most memorable performance, but it has some merit, the bigger problem being its price point. It will certainly be early maturing and I wouldn't expect it to age overly well.
