Bright red-ruby. Aromas and flavors of plum, redcurrant, blueberry, mocha, tobacco leaf, menthol, cardamom and sandalwood. Surprisingly soft in the mouth, with a silkiness of texture that feels more like Merlot than Cabernet. This broad, easygoing wine finishes with lovely length - and very smooth, harmonious tannins for Red Mountain. (14.5% alcohol; 41% new oak)
Bright, compelling aromas of raspberry, red currant and spice lead to ripe red-fruit flavors that taper toward the finish. Plump, surprisingly tamed tannins provide support.
Deep ruby/purple-colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain checks in as 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, and 2% each of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, all aged 20 months in 41% new French (and a small amount of American) oak. Blackcurrants, black cherries, spice box, dried herbs, and earthy notes all emerge from the glass, and it's medium-bodied, elegant, and seamless on the palate, with beautiful fruit. It's good today but has good underlying tannins, and I suspect it will keep for 10+ years.
The 2016 Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon has also been blended with 8% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. It has a nose of healthy red and black fruit along with the dusty Red Mountain minerality. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals a well-made wine with precision and balance and evolving expressions of red flowers, dusty minerality and balancing tannins on the long, well-structured finish. The overall production was 20,000 cases.
Dense and bound by firm tannins at this point, with blackberry and green olive flavors simmering in the background. Best after 2029. 20,000 cases made.
