The story began in 1962, when 19 vine growers from the village of San Marzano di San Giuseppe (TA), whose families had farmed the land for generations, came together to follow their dream and founded Cantine San Marzano. Throughout the decades it has grown significantly and now attracts over 1,200 top-quality vine growers.
Using modern vinification techniques, San Marzano produces elegant and clean wines that pay homage to the ancient Puglian wine traditions. This fusion of time-honored tradition, passion, and contemporary craftsmanship, enables the production of wines with distinctive varietal characteristics that reflect the essence of the local terroir.
The team of winemakers is built to create the peculiar and innovative style that makes San Marzano recognizable at the first sip. Caterina Bellanova and Davide Ragusa were born and grew up in Puglia: Caterina represents the exquisite touch essential to create iconic wines. Davide is a young and talented winemaker. He studied oenology in Florence and developed his practical skills during several harvests abroad.
The Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria of the Cantine San Marzano is a pure Primitivo, which appears with a deep ruby red in the glass. The nose reveals aromas of prunes, cherry jam, and sweet spices such as cloves, cinnamon, and vanilla. On the palate, the Sessantanni is well structured, full, and fleshy with wonderfully integrated acidity and soft yet characteristic tannins. In the impressively long finish of this red wine, berry and fruit aromas, and spicy and tobacco notes come to the fore again. Nevertheless, this Primitivo is an excellent accompaniment to braised beef, lamb, wild boar, or venison meat dishes as well as to fine dark chocolate.
