Montes Alpha Syrah 2017
|Region||Chile, Colchagua, Apalta Valley|
Wine SpectatorA floral aroma introduces this red, with plenty of meaty and Asian spice notes to the decadent roasted plum and dark cherry flavors. Slate and hot stone accents come in on the muscular finish, with hints of baker's chocolate. Drink now through 2023.
VinousA Syrah with Cabernet Sauvignon (7%) and Viognier (3%) from Colchagua, all co-fermented. Dark violet in color, it offers aromas of blackberry and raspberry jam and attractive sweet spices. Indulgent, with good volume. The firm, slightly taut tannins lend structure to the lengthy finish.
Wine AdvocateThe toasty and ripe 2017 Alpha Syrah was produced with fruit from Colchagua that was cropped from a warm and dry year and contains some 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Viognier. When tasted next to the Syrah from Aconcagua Costa (Outer Limits), it clearly shows the influence of the warmer place and riper year with black rather than red fruit and notes of toasted wood that make a strong comeback in the finish. It needs powerful food.
