Elena Walch Kastelaz Gewürztraminer 2018
|Region||Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige|
Golden-tinged straw. Smoked bacon fat, papaya, mango, orange oil and grapefruit nectar on the nose and in the mouth. Smooth, rich and ripe, with good finishing cut and clarity, not to mention a hint of alcoholic warmth. Lovely, big wine that will have every Gewürz lover swooning at first taste.
I've added the word "Vigna" (vineyard) to the name of this wine (as it appears on the label) because I know how hard the folks at Elena Walch have been working to communicate their various single-vineyard parcels. The 2018 Alto Adige Gewürztraminer Vigna Kastelaz is very representative of the variety with overstated aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle. The wine is absolutely singing-and in a very loud voice, I must add. Some 14,000 bottles were made.
Sleek and minerally, this well-cut, medium-bodied white shows pretty aromas of tea rose and spice that lace the lychee, guava and lemon curd flavors. A rich streak of smoke and stone echoes on the finish. Drink now through 2028. 1,200 cases made.
