Schild Estate Wines are created with authenticity and passion that comes from generations of a family who have made their home in the Southern Barossa. This irreplaceable vineyard was planted in 1847 by Willam and John Jacob, just eleven years after the foundation of South Australia putting them amongst the oldest in the world. Situated between Jacob’s Creek and the North Para River the vineyard gets its name from the Indigenous word 'Moorooroo' meaning 'meeting of two waters'.

A mild, December and January with cool nights saw ideal conditions prevail towards the end of the 2016 growing season. The result was a measured pace of ripening which ensured the balanced development of sugar and flavours in the fruit along with the retention of natural grape acid before some later season warmth allowed some real fruit presence to develop. A particularly strong year for red wines in the region. Hand-harvested and then crushed into traditional open-top fermenters, the wine undergoes pre-fermentation cold soak before being either gently pumped over or punched down by hand according to winemaker specifications so as to obtain optimal colour and retain complex fruit flavours. Additional post-fermentation maceration usually occurs before the wine is then drained and pressed to barrel. Free run and pressings are usually kept separate and a combination of new and aged oak barrels are used for the maturation of between 18-24 months. The wine is then prepared for bottling before seeing some further time in bottle prior to release.

Deep ruby, purple in colour showing intense and creamy aromas of dark compote berry fruit with hints of blackberry, plums and mulberries peeking through. On the palate waves of the same dark berry fruit show early providing a density and voluptuousness to the mouth-feel that remains deep into the mouth and rolls out through the back. It is joined by just a hint of spice and some subtle glimpses of faint leather and sandalwood.

Starts off dense and monolithic, with a mouthful of blackberry and blueberry fruit. This slowly reveals a full range of flavors and aromas, including chai tea, vanilla bean, sage, dried apricot, dark chocolate and dried mint. Shows terrific harmony and presence on the finish, offering thick, velvety tannins that linger. Drink now through 2037. 400 cases made, 150 cases imported.

With climate change already knocking at Australia's door, the heavy bottle and thick plastic seal is disappointing to see here. The contents inside, however, prove solid. Nearly opaque in color, this wine neatly combines earthy characters like charred beets and cumin with cracked black pepper, chocolate and coffee oak notes and plush blackberry fruit. There's power on the palate but not overt heaviness. Savory, granular tannins support a midpalate of silky fruit and oak. Give this another few years in the bottle. Drink 2022-2035.
