The origin of the Meyer Family Cellars comes from one of the most recognized names in Napa and Alexander Valley, Silver Oak. In 1972 Justin Meyer and his wife, Bonny, co-founded Silver Oak. In 1987 Meyer Family Cellars was created as a place for Justin to produce Port and in 1998 Justin and his son Matt started producing Syrah from a property in the Yorkville Highlands. The Meyers sold Silver Oak officially in 2001. Today the label is a continued team effort between Matt Meyer and his Australian wife Karen Meyer. Though they still have a connection to Silver Oak, at times sharing fruit, Meyer Family Cellars produces wines of elegance and restraint, while staying true to the regions they produce from.

Spitfire is a good old American Cabernet that is polished and elegant. The aromas spring to life with ripe plum and blackberries jumping out of the glass. Once open for a few minutes, we start to see the telltale American Oak vanilla along with hints of caramel and pepper. Two years in oak have softened the palate, making this a very approachable Oakville red wine. As with previous vintages, we get hints of cardamom and other savory characters.

The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon “Spitfire” hailing from Oakville is a classic full-bodied red which spends two years in American oak, giving this wine notes of cherry and vanilla with ripe fig, plum, blackberry, and dark chocolate. This wine needs at least 5-10 years to rest, but if you are feeling impatient and want a comparison tasting with Silver Oak, decant the wine, swirl, and enjoy!
