#8 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2022 (2019 Vintage)

Fattoria Le Pupille’s Saffredi is widely considered to be one of the original Super Tuscans, a wine that helped to put Tuscany on the map of the world’s fine wines in the late 1980s and has been named “Best Maremma Toscana Wine”

Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot vines planted in 1980, this elegant bottling by Elisabetta Geppetti, a visionary of Tuscan winemaking, is now considered a classic and a benchmark of Italian viticulture.

Fattoria le Pupille’s estate is located inland but in view of the coast, and it lies at roughly 300 meters a.s.l., covering more than 400 hectares. Although the winery is not certified, farming practices are entirely organic. To learn more about this incredible woman-lead winery check out their dedicated page Fattoria le Pupille.

Robert Parker 95 Points "This blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot is exuberant and explosive. The 2020 Saffredi reveals a very ripe and rich interpretation of this iconic wine made by Elisabetta Geppetti and her family. The blend of fruit is the same, but 2020 actually sees less oak intervention to allow that dark fruit to shine through. There is blackberry, perfumed rose, dried apricot, spice, and sweet cinnamon. In all, the wine offers immediate fruit and vertical delivery of flavors. Finding that combination of wine versus oak is not easy, Elisabetta tells me."

Impressive aromas of fresh herbs from the Tuscan coast, such as sage, mint, rosemary, and thyme. Blackcurrants, too. Full-bodied with fine, chewy tannins that show beautiful length and consistency. Racy and beautiful, with lots of subtle and refined character. Slightly more cabernet sauvignon this year, which adds class to the wine. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 10% petit verdot. Give this about three or four years of bottle age.

The 2020 Saffredi is compelling. Deep yet quite structured, 2020 is unlike any Saffredi I can recall tasting because of its balance of intense dark fruit and vertical structure. Plum, blackberry, pencil shavings, lavender, and spice saturate the palate. Readers will have to be patient, as 2020 is not as showy as most vintages at the same stage…This is another fine set of wines from Le Pupille. Proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti has long been a leader in Tuscany's Maremma, as these wines fully attest. The Morellinos are terrific, as are the higher-end Poggio Valente and Saffredi.

A rich, juicy nose presents handfuls of cherries and mulberries, along with slices of passion fruit, but a fresh savoriness keeps the sweetness in check. On the palate, dark chocolate brings depth, while tannins and acid attack in tandem. Bold and self-assured-a precise wine.
